KOKO: Keep On Keepin' On...

It ain’t pretty outside, sort of a steady stream of misty rain that refuses to turn into light or heavy rain. Walking to work was like having a slightly chilly spa facial treatment. I treated myself with a latte from the Starbucks because I’ve become enamored of late with the plain toasted bagel as breakfast. I’m more a butter than cream cheese spreader tho. When I got into the office, I dropped the buttered half-a-bagel and it landed butter side down, of course, on my jeans.

Not really off to a good start today, but if that little plant shoot outside can ignore adversity, then so can I. They did such a good job of landscaping around here that the plant sex was quite rampant and nestled all over between the cracks of the brickwork sidewalks. We have a few more peeking up through the cracks, but this little guy is in such a place that it’s unlikely to be walked on. So I’ll keep rooting (yeah, I said it) for it until someone notices and they have to chop it off.

at home: Don’t Be Trashy

Good Day Sunshine... and Trash

What a perfect way to start the day. With a good ol’, “What’s that smell?” when you step off the elevators. Our building’s trash chutes are still off-limits to us, so we’re still carting our trash and recyclables down behind the basement entrance. Makes Spring Cleaning oh so much fun, lemme tell ya. But some people see fit to leave their bags outside overnight, perhaps as a reminder to grab them in the morning and take them out. And this could be from an older resident since the board was kind enough to say that they don’t expect them to make that trip all the time, but still not what I want to run into on my way out to work.

Looks like more wibbly-wobbly weather with rain on the way… maybe. I’ll just keep popping my pills for the time being. I’m hoping for some good weather this weekend though so I can head outside and build up a tolerance. My co-worker mentioned that today feels like Friday for her, but I feel a day behind and thought it was Hump Day when I woke up. Regardless, bring on the weekend already! The office definitely has a vibe of weariness to it today and people are ready for a break.

the rain has stopped & I’m back on the drugs!

I promise that I shall never trust in the old advice, “Oh thank goodness it’s raining, I don’t need to take my allergy pills today!” Especially when it rains for 2 or 3 days straight. Even shutting out the outside world didn’t help and it caught up with me last night. So today’s been a sleep in late and be domestic kinda day. Only a few errands (mainly to get allergy meds) and I’ve been home doing a bit of tidying between a lot of sitting down.

I have little entertainment to share except this recent gem from The Onion: Historic ‘Blockbuster’ Store Offers Glimpse Of How Movies Were Rented In The Past. My TiVo can download video podcasts, which is about the only way I’ll watch them since most web video just bores me. I never bought into the whole “small screen” entertainment, no matter how cute the podcaster might be. Keep an eye on the news ticker for some fun headlines as well.

Funny… but also very true. I love the Kathy character, “Two times a week I travel 6 miles to rent and return videos.” And the fond memories of going to the store and finding out that the video you wanted was already being rented. But what I most remember about Blockbuster stores is that you could easily gauge how queer the surrounding neighborhood was by how many copies of each gay and lesbian movies they had and whether or not there was a specific section just for those films.

at the pumps: disbelief or a lack of forethought?

Date May 13, 2008

I know this shouldn’t make me laugh, but it’s more a reaction to the absurdity of the state of things.

Small service stations are running into a problem as gasoline marches toward $4 a gallon in the United States: Thousands of old-fashioned pumps can’t register more than $3.99 on their spinning mechanical dials.

– CNN: New prices swamp old gas pumps

Some of the same pumps can only count up to $99.99 as a total, keeping land behemoth or soccer team mover owners from filling up. An alternate solution for some states is to allow stations to display the price for a ½-gallon and then double the final price shown.

Makes me glad I can walk most places I need to reach, but if buses and trains start suffering from the same rising fuel/power/maintenance issues, I might need to whip out the bike… or share one!

Rap video outfit or Prom dress?

Date May 13, 2008

Marche Taylor modeling her skimpy prom dress

I think this girl had big plans and was really going somewhere. Namely a late night “Girls Gone Wild” video shoot after her prom. Bobby just told me about this story of a girl taken away in handcuffs after wearing a skimpy dress to her prom and being denied entry. CNN has video of the “story” which I call out for being slow news day fluff, but even so gimme a break, girl. A few frames of the video show that the Prom flyer, had she read and/or paid it any heed, made it clear that her outfit would be unacceptable. And because she couldn’t get her way, she caused a scene. She wore that dress to get some attention, and it looks like she got her wish.

And on the other side of the scale, this poor guy gets a ticket for trespassing because a deputy didn’t care for seeing him in a speedo… on the beach.

But hey, it’s not as if there’s any important news we should be informed about instead, right?
