Oh… I can wait.

Classic Joker moment from "The Devil's Advocate"

Why stop geeking out now when I’m on such a roll? I was catching up with some entries from a comic scans group on LiveJournal over my lunch break and the above scene from The Joker: The Devil’s Advocate story arc stood out to me. The Joker is on death row for killing over 2,000 people while the Batman is actually trying to prove that he didn’t do it. Even though he professed his innocence, once behind bars he starts to like all the attention he’s getting. In the panels above, he was just asked about his last meal. It’s a classic Joker moment by a writer that gets him.

Also good is a few pages later when the priest he requested is screaming for the guards to let him out of the Joker’s cell. The guards rush in, saying that he’d been in there for hours and assuming that the Joker must be doing something unspeakable to him. When they let him out, the guards ask “What’s he doing to you?” and the priest cries out, “Confessing!” as the Joker is relating the end of another grisly tale about how he killed someone. Talk about staring into the abyss.

Even though the upcoming Batman movie is doing away with the “comic book” trappings about the Joker’s origin, I’m looking forward to it. I’ve been hearing nothing but good things. Plus I can’t wait to see what other loose threads they’re going to dangle in front of us to leave the door open to introduce more of his rogues’ gallery in additional sequels.

Who am I…?

You’ll have to excuse me as I just had a little geek-gasm. I was reading through some feeds while responding to work e-mails and the gawker sci-fi blog io9 had a story up today about the best space battle smack talk with plenty of video clips. They highlight some good ones, but they reminded me why Claudia Christian is still one of my top female sci-fi leads and why Babylon 5, though it has much to make fun of, still kicks ass. It’s all about the speeches.

A really excellent fan made spoof of Star Trek and Babylon 5 called Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning made fun of this more than once (silly names used to protect the spoof’ening)

Sherrypie: Damn, this doesn’t look good. I’m afraid we have only one recourse.
Ivanovitsa: You don’t mean…?
Sherrypie: Yes. We have to stall for time. I’m giving a speech!

I couldn’t find a shorter clip, but it’s only the first minute and 35 seconds that need to be seen.

It gives me a “Why can’t I say stuff like that in my office?” sort of feeling. I mean I have done the intimidation thing before using my height or voice or facial expressions which I sometimes find myself unable to control. But who wouldn’t love to whip out, “I am the right hand of vengeance… and the boot that is gonna kick your sorry ass!” when being given yet another impossible deadline, extreme workload or getting hit up with unreasonable expectations?

Sci-Fi channel needs to get their act together, pull in the legal and the accounting teams to buy up some permissions and rights and start showing these programs again. The way tv is going now, I’ve got my dvds, Food Network and Discovery Channel and I’ve got no need to channel surf ever again.

What’s Your Type?

What's Your Type?

I fear for the next person to ask me that question, because I will most assuredly respond, “Helvetica.” Extensis has put up Typecaster: some cute video shorts that let you attempt to (mix &) match up various typefaces and see how they would fare on a date. It’s very well put together and as a bonus, each vignette is captioned, so you can keep the speakers low and still get the gist. As a total font junkie, I love it, particular faves are Helvetica & American Typewriter, Comic Sans & Stencil and given the reality of online dating, Comic Sans & Mistral seems to be very appropriate. I did match up boy/girl pairs too, don’t give me that look! It’s just the first boy/girl pairing was Papyrus & Comic Sans… I think I’m gonna need therapy.

And after taking the quiz to determine my type?

Typecast Yourself!

Go on… try to look surprised.

In DC: Retail Explosion

Coming soon!

Yeah yeah, it’s old news, but it’s been a busy day and I’m tapped. :-) I’m gonna be living down the street from quite the little retail hub. This is gonna be SO bad for my wallet. Especially now that I am…

*deep breath*

OUT OF DEBT!

I have checked and double-checked all of the names and companies on my credit report and made sure that all balances shown are either $0 or have had checks issued to them. It’s actually quite an exciting feeling. I feel like I should celebrate, but that might not be very fiscally responsible. However, I am definitely able to afford it. I’m not gushing about it yet, but I imagine the reality of it all will hit me soon enough. For now, I just might have some hot wings.

Soylent Green is made of Leprechauns!

Chicago River St Patricks Day 08
I was really starting to fear that days of observing St. Patrick’s Day were long and far away from my time in Elementary School where every holiday official or not caused at least a few weeks of celebration. On the metro this morning, there was very little green peeking out from under the coats and nearly no one in the office is wearing green, a testament to the evolved diverse workplace. I saw some shamrock ties and a few ladies with green tops on, but otherwise it was pretty barren. That is, until a few moments ago when I shared the elevator down to the cafeteria with a gentleman whose closely cropped hair was dyed a lovely shade of green. While it may have been done for a weekend event and not necessarily for the office, it still counts.

Of course these days the usual penalty for not wearing green is unlikely to be suffered due to the fear of being called in for a visit to Human Resources. I’ve got a bit of green on, so no pinches for me and I was fully prepared with an outfit for any Patty-Parties, but none were on the agenda this weekend. Still, it’s Monday and even without the holiday I’m sure everyone could gladly do with a pint.

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day everyone… just keep that corned beef and cabbage to yourselves.
