It is also not a charity ball…

Danie got me started this morning, so she is surely to blame for this.

I’m sure we all have those moments where we reminisce about old tv shows and theme songs and how cheesy they were. And while you lose yourself in your memories for a bit, something… perhaps a sense of self-preservation or maybe coolness-preservation stops you about a nanosecond before you would find yourself belting out, “Life’s..! Not..! The French Riviera…!

No? Just me? Ok, then…

I am also very happy to finally know where the “Step 3: Profit!” joke comes from.

on the subject of bloggers and commenters

I don’t watch “Root of All Evil” and have no plans to start, but I might have to keep catching the good snippets online. In general I’m noticing that a lot of the “bigger” blogs are starting to have more and more crackdowns on their comment areas, but the “biggest” ones are still subject to a complete lack of moderation. Especially when they think that a self-moderated community is a working concept. A recent xkcd strip suggests a solution that, while it wouldn’t fix anything, it might make it easier to deal with.

Thankfully, I have a good filter for spam on this site even though it can be a little aggressive from time to time. But I am so glad that I’ve never had a First! comment (don’t you dare) or had someone calling something totally gay, though that latter would actually fit in just fine here.

With the slow evolution of net/lol-speak into the accepted vernacular, I have to wonder how long it will take before the intra-office e-mails start to show signs of it. That would be scary… and hilarious!

and time… is still marching on

Oh yeah, it’s that time of year. That explains my mood perfectly! It’s about a month before my birthday and it seems like no matter how carefree I may or may not have been all year, for the next 30 days I just feel older and older.

And sure I can be introspective, and I can examine where my life is and where it’s going and all that crap. But honestly, it’s just making me moody and leaving me in a horrible funk and that’s not the kind of funk I prefer!

But at least there’s more moderate weather to look forward to. That’s something, right?

In non-life-crisis news, I can’t tell yet if I’m excited about Star Trek Online. I know Cryptic can do a good product, I just wish they’d get to developin’ and release something new. Between that and Champions Online, I could be a very happy gamer. Besides, Penny Arcade’s take on questing in Star Trek Online is just too funny.

So don’t let go, of the power of elevation.

Is it bad that during the final battle scene in Kung Fu Panda between Po and Tai Lung, all I could hear in my head was the song “The Glow” from The Last Dragon?

“No… I am THE fat panda!” *hee hee

Sunday Sampler

What is it about elevators that allow them to retain a distinct memory of the aromas of previous riders? In recent days my morning ride down has been filled with the smell of an over-cologner, wet dog and just this afternoon to go to the grocery store? Corn chips–not the smelly feet kind, just corn chips. I’m used to the elevators at work smelling like dirty rotten smokers, but the scents at home are just weird!

As I was on the bus coming home from the grocery store, a woman comes up waving a scratch-off lottery ticket and says, “I just wanted to share my good news, I just won $100!” I told her congratulations and she giddily went back to her own seat. I had to wonder how much she’d spent on tickets, but no need to be a damper on her triumph. :-)

I’m starting my “At Home Restaurant-Like Week” a little early and thinking about expanding it to a full month. I picked up some Cornish game hens tonight and I’ll try to do something interesting with those and, per some twitter advice, some substantial side dishes. I know game hens are hardly exotic, but I’ve never cooked with them before and a key is that they make for a good sized serving for one person. I don’t expect this experiment to necessarily be full of healthy dishes, but matching portion size to meal size is still important not only for calories, but for boredom. I’m not averse to leftovers, but it would be nice to be able to enjoy a lot of different kinds of dishes in a shorter time span without having to pawn off tupperware onto friends and co-workers.

And I think I may have to start reading Miss Conduct’s Blog. This quote from a January entry about fat-pride and fat-phobia cracked me up:

As I’ve said before, if you think fat people have no self-discipline, consider the fact that they haven’t killed you yet.
