It is also not a charity ball…

Danie got me started this morning, so she is surely to blame for this.

I’m sure we all have those moments where we reminisce about old tv shows and theme songs and how cheesy they were. And while you lose yourself in your memories for a bit, something… perhaps a sense of self-preservation or maybe coolness-preservation stops you about a nanosecond before you would find yourself belting out, “Life’s..! Not..! The French Riviera…!

No? Just me? Ok, then…

I am also very happy to finally know where the “Step 3: Profit!” joke comes from.

on the subject of bloggers and commenters

I don’t watch “Root of All Evil” and have no plans to start, but I might have to keep catching the good snippets online. In general I’m noticing that a lot of the “bigger” blogs are starting to have more and more crackdowns on their comment areas, but the “biggest” ones are still subject to a complete lack of moderation. Especially when they think that a self-moderated community is a working concept. A recent xkcd strip suggests a solution that, while it wouldn’t fix anything, it might make it easier to deal with.

Thankfully, I have a good filter for spam on this site even though it can be a little aggressive from time to time. But I am so glad that I’ve never had a First! comment (don’t you dare) or had someone calling something totally gay, though that latter would actually fit in just fine here.

With the slow evolution of net/lol-speak into the accepted vernacular, I have to wonder how long it will take before the intra-office e-mails start to show signs of it. That would be scary… and hilarious!

Olympics: Bronze never looked so… hot

Uh… I’m sorry, what was I going to type? I got a little distracted.

I actually haven’t seen much of the Olympic Games coverage. I have a few shows saved on my TiVo, but finding time to sit down and watch multiple programs with up to 4 hours of coverage each isn’t easy.

OMG the Fairy Shoe-Person!!

After seeing this song on YouTube, I knew I was going to have to record at least one episode of Sesame Street this season. I barely recognize any of the new actors or muppets/monsters, but NPH got a good half of the episode trying to satisfy Telly with some new shoes. After a few botched attempts, Telly realized that monsters don’t need shoes!

I’m not sure NPH has been called a ‘fairy’ so many times in the same instance where it was being played straight… so to speak. Fredo already mentioned another highlight of their 39th year, Feist doing a re-worked version of “1234” and I’ll keep an eye on the PBS site to see if there are any other good ones coming up.

And Kelly really needs to make a shoe wish!

Get me a dictionary!

In yet another “why aren’t you watching this… and if you are, why aren’t we dishing about it?” entry comes a quick snippet from The Venture Bros.

They had been trying to solve a riddle by using the internet before calling in The Alchemist. As the riddle was from the Victorian era, their solution was all wrong. Amazingly enough The Alchemist isn’t afraid of the internet, but seems to use it for the same thing as most luddites do.

It reminds me of my friend that couldn’t seem to figure out how to look up something in Google, send someone an e-mail, or figure out anything in Microsoft Office. Now when he was in the middle of telling you about some guy he was talking to the other night and I said “How’d you meet him?” — “Oh we were online and we did a video chat and traded photos via IM.”

Beneath the common saying of “The Internet is for Porn” I tend to find my more apt phrase, “People use the internet for two things: to get paid or to get laid.” If they can’t find a way to do one or the other, it just isn’t interesting to them.
